Tunnelling: What You May Experience

As you may know, the Eglinton Crosstown includes a 10-kilometre underground portion, between Keele Street and Laird Drive. For the tunnelled portion, locomotives run along interim track and transport materials and haul spoils in and out of the tunnels to the extraction shafts. Update: Vacuum Truck at Emergency Exit Building #3 (Overnight Work)

What work is happening?

Construction at the Emergency Exit Building (EEB) site at next to Leaside High School continues. The contractor is in the process of using a vacuum truck for the purpose of lowering the water level in the emergency exit building shaft, so that they can safely open the tunnel boring machine cutterhead to perform needed maintenance.

What: In addition to the jet grout plant currently set-up on Donlea Drive just north of Eglinton Avenue, crews have recently installed a jet grout surplus treatment plant within the Emergency Exit Building construction site, which is adjacent to Leaside High School on the south side of Eglinton Avenue East. Tunnelling for the Crosstown: What you may experience

As you know, tunnelling continues on the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) project as we build the underground portion of the future transit line. 

The tunnel boring machines (TBMs) operate around the clock - 24 hours a day, seven days week. On average, they each travel about 10 metres per day. Our TBMs are working about 20 metres below ground, but we do sometimes hear from nearby residents who may experience vibration from the TBMs as they pass through the area.    Read more »

Eglinton Crosstown Construction Update

Metrolinx is making progress on the Crosstown project. Construction of a launch shaft east of Brentcliffe Road is complete and assembly of two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is nearing completion. Utility relocation and headwall construction along Eglinton Avenue East between Brentcliffe and Bayview started in January 2014. Some works along the road have been completed and others are progressing well. The Crosstown Team appreciates the patience of our neighbours while we work to build transit. Read more »

Eglinton Crosstown Line Station and Stop Names

The Eglinton Crosstown Project is building the Eglinton Line, a 19-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line that will run along Eglinton Avenue through the heart of Toronto, with a 10-kilometre underground tunnel in its central section. When it’s complete, the line will connect Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Road in the east, and will be up to 60% faster than bus service today.    Read more »

East tunnel boring machines begin their journey!

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT tunnel boring machines 'Don' and 'Humber' will begin their journey westward on September 29, 2015, marking another milestone toward the completion of the new LRT. 

The westbound tunnelling will start from the launch shaft located east of Brentcliffe Rd. and will proceed towards Yonge St. Work on the western segment of the tunnel has been underway since June 2013 with four of the 6.5 kilometres already complete. All tunnelling work is expected to be finished by the end of 2016. Read more »
