As part of continued support of the future surface alignment for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, crews will be commencing construction of the Traction Power Substation (TPSS) 12 that will power the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (ECLRT). The work will take place in a fenced work zone located on the north east side of Birchmount Road in close proximity to Toronto Police Service 41 Station.

Starting as soon as Tuesday June 4, the sidewalk to the east of Birchmount will be closed for up to two (2) weeks. Pedestrians will be directed to use the south sidewalk.

TPSS 12 Location:

What is a traction power substation?

  • A TPSS is a steel building similar in size to a shipping container.
  • It provides electrical power to the LRT via the overhead catenary system used to power the trains.
  • A TPSS converts electricity from the local power source to the levels needed by the vehicles.
  • A TPSS is a safe structure that will not introduce any new risk to the community in which it is constructed.
  • All TPSS structures are air-conditioned and therefore emit a low humming noise, similar to a residential air conditioner.

Hours of Work

  • Work will be performed between the hours of 7 am and 11 pm, seven (7) days a week.
  • Note: Unexpected circumstances (weather, equipment failure, etc.) may also change the above interruption plans or prolong the interruption. If this occurs, we will endeavor to provide reasonable notice.
